The clue is in the name ‘clean’ and a face wipe will not do this!
It’s very easy to feel overwhelmed when choosing a cleanser, the market is flooded with products and as a consumer it’s easy to be influenced by others, especially in the world we live in right now. The lovely 20 year old influencer showcasing the cleanser she is using may not well suit your skin if you are sensitive for example.
You know your skin best, if you suffer from breakouts during your time of the month, or spend a lot of time outside you might have more dry skin for example. Everyone is different.
You should be cleansing twice a day, AM and PM. First thing in the morning, one cleanse is enough to remove the dirt, sweat and such like from the night before, everyone perspires overnight – EVERYONE!
Depending on your cleanser a small 5p sized amount should be sufficient, I pop that on my fingertips quickly massage on to my alternate fingers then onto the face using circular motions, you should cover all the way down the neck too, it’s one of the first areas to show signs of ageing so make sure you cover it.
Remove with a damp face cloth or reusable cotton pad. Then continue with your usual routine.
In the evening you do the same as above but twice – think of all of the makeup products and SPF on your face, these products are designed to stay on your face all day long so they need to be removed sufficiently. SPF does not cause the skin to block or cause breakouts, insufficient removal can cause the skin to break out.
With your evening routine it’s best to do this a minimum of half an hour before you go to bed, it can take this long for all of your wonderful facial products to fully absorb into your skin – we don’t want your pillow enjoying all of your gorgeous products.
Some tough love is coming up – face wipes do not clean your skin, they simply move all the makeup around your face and are horrendous for the environment. DO NOT USE THESE, Ruth, that’s you I’m talking to again! Micellar water is very drying to the skin and can cause irritation, use only in an emergency or after a very late night, something is better than nothing in this situation, festivals too.
Here are some cleansers that I am enjoying right now, Million Dollar Dermacleanse, it’s gentle but effective containing natural papaya fruit extract to gently exfoliate and hydrate.
Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel which is lightly scented with rose and chamomile in a gel to oil cleanser and packed full of vitamins and nutrients.
A staple in my cabinet is Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual containing Vitamin C which brightens and even the skin tone and watermelon seed oil which has Vitamins A, C and E to balance, moisturise and brighten the skin.
